Description:

East Asia, Japan, , Momoyama to Edo period, ca. late 16th to early 17th century CE. An antique Japanese Wakizashi sword in koshirae signed and attributed to the noted swordsmith Shitahara Jyu Masanaga of the Shitahara school. This piece features a beautifully lacquered black scabbard (saya), a traditionally wrapped blue silk handle (tsuka) over ray skin (samegawa), and menuki charms in the form of lion dogs (komainu) made of copper with 2% to 6% gold gilt. The fuchi is copper with 26% gold, and the pommel kashira is copper with 15% gold, finely detailed with floral gilt decoration. The tsuba is iron with a gold wash decoration. The blade bears Masanaga's signature on the tang (nakago). Accompanied by a patterned silk sword bag, this Wakizashi is a wonderful antique with light wear and patina consistent with its age, preserving the craftsmanship and historical character of a fine Shitahara school blade. Size in koshirae: 28.5" L x 2.25" W (72.4 cm x 5.7 cm); blade: 17" L x 1" W (43.2 cm x 2.5 cm)

Shitahara Jyu Masanaga was a swordsmith active during the late Muromachi to early Edo periods, working within the Shitahara school of swordmaking in Musashi Province (modern-day Tokyo region). The Shitahara school is known for producing utilitarian yet well-balanced blades, often commissioned for samurai in service to local lords. Masanaga's work typically features robust shapes, straight or gently undulating temper lines (hamon), and signatures (mei) that attest to the school’s respected regional tradition.
