Description:

East Asia, Japan, Hizen Province, Edo Period, ca. early 18th century CE. A finely crafted wakizashi signed "Hizen koku junin Tadayoshi" on the tang, attributing the blade to a smith of the Hizen Tadayoshi lineage, active during the early 1700s. The blade features a shallow curvature and a softly undulating gunome temper line (hamon). A well-defined kissaki, low mune (back ridge), and slightly raised shinogi exemplify classic Shinto-period construction. The nakago (tang) exhibits a rich patina and a single mekugi-ana. The sword is mounted in a lacquered Edo-period koshirae embellished with golden mon (samurai family crests). The tsuka (handle) is bound with a brown ito wrap over white samegawa (rayskin), with gilt copper menuki of floral design and a fuchi-kashira set decorated with crane motifs. The iron tsuba is adorned with swirling storm clouds and lightning bolts picked out in fine gilt detail. Size in koshirae: 27" L x 2.5" W (68.6 cm x 6.4 cm); blade: 18.5" L x 1" W (47 cm x 2.5 cm); gold quality: 24% (equivalent to 5K+)

The sword's mei (signature) appears genuine; however, no NBTHK or NTHK origami (authentication papers) accompany the piece. For formal verification and authoritative attribution, we recommend submitting the blade to a recognized Japanese sword appraisal organization for shinsa (expert evaluation).
