Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A wakizashi presented in full koshirae, forged in shinogi-zukuri, with a a ridged, gently tapered blade and a visible temper line that forms small rolling waves before becoming straighter near the tip. The tang is original to the blade and retains its historical peg hole and file marks, confirming traditional construction. Purportedly the tang is signed "Hizen Kuni ju Tadayoshi," linking the blade to the celebrated Tadayoshi lineage of Hizen province in northern Kyushu. The mountings include a circular iron tsuba with a single hitsu-ana, iron fuchi and kashira decorated with insect motifs in raised relief with gilt accents, blossom-form bronze menuki with partial gilding, and a black-lacquered saya with a leathery surface texture. Size of blade: 20.75" L (52.7 cm); in saya: 31" L x 2.75" W (78.7 cm x 7 cm); gold quality: 47% (equivalent to 11K+)
