East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large cast brass okimono statue of Hotei (or Budai), the Laughing Buddha, standing upon his large money / treasure sack. Hotei is the wandering Buddha associated with fortune, and joy, this carefree and happy nature comes from the presence of others, usually children. He is almost always portrayed with a large sack often filled with money that represents abundance. Size: 11" L x 6.5" W x 13.3" H (27.9 cm x 16.5 cm x 33.8 cm)

  • Condition: Faint character mark stamped on the verso of figure, rubbed and mostly indiscernible. Scratches and abrasions to the surface of sack base and a few on the Buddha's body. Casting imperfections and tiny perforations to feet.
