Lot 40G
Japan, Meiji, early 20th century, A finely crafted rectangular Japanese copper box, the lid delicately inlaid in silver and copper with a full moon rising above a stand of autumn grasses (susuki) and seasonal wildflowers, executed in low relief and surrounded by intricate black lacquer linework. The refined contrast between metals and lacquer creates a tranquil nocturnal landscape in the tradition of Meiji-period naturalist aesthetics. The composition exemplifies the Japanese reverence for natures cycles, particularly the poetic beauty of autumn. The box is fitted and solid copper on all sides with silvered brass interior; the interior likely once used to hold writing tools or precious items. The accompanying tray is hammered copper with silver feet, Size of box: 4.875" L x 3.75" W x 1.625" H (12.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 4.1 cm)
