Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A substantial and finely carved wooden tsuitate panel (standing screen), featuring a masterfully executed sunken relief of Bodhidharma, known in Japan as Daruma, the legendary Buddhist monk and patriarch of Zen. The bust is rendered with expressive detail, the intense gaze enhanced by darker ebony wood inlaid eyes. A circular seal appears beside the figure. The narrow edge of the panel has an panel insert signed in white "Koseido" with red seals, indicating the likely studio or maker. The reverse side presents an inscribed, lengthy poem signed Kinzan Doji (probably a Buddhist layman), accompanied by his seal and an additional seal mark. A superb example of Meiji-era craftsmanship, combining sculptural technique, calligraphy, and spiritual iconography in a powerful decorative and contemplative object. Size: 20.25" L x 32" H (51.4 cm x 81.3 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco, California, USA; ex-Robert (Bob) Moore Collection.
