Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

East Asia, Japan, late Muromachi to early Edo period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A fabulous scroll painting known as a kakemono depicting the Fukujin or Seven Lucky Gods from Japanese mythology. The seven deities have independent origins in Buddhism, Taoism, and Shinto, and have been an important part of Japanese culture since the 15th century (Muromachi era). Although most of these characters have a courtly or scholarly appearance, they were popularized by farmers, merchants, and artisans. Consequently, their treasures are practical things like rice, fish and cash, rather than gold or jewels. The stool-shaped seal in the lower right is typical of the Kano school of artists, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. Size of painting: 20.2" W x 19.5" H (51.3 cm x 49.5 cm); of frame: 26.6" W x 25.6" H (67.6 cm x 65 cm)
