Description:

Japan, Muromachi to early Edo., ca. 1481 - 1640 CE. A compelling assemblage of samurai armor elements tightly packed in its original yoroibitsu storage chest, the front boldly emblazoned with a geometric hishi clan mon. The set presents lacquered iron and leather components bound with vivid vermilion silk odoshi lacing, together with lengths of kusari (chain mail) and small lamellar plates (kozane), copper-alloy fittings, and cordage, all preserved in as-found condition. The box is of wood finished in black urushi lacquer, constructed with plank sides and a removable lid, its heraldic lozenges serving both as décor and as an identifier of the owner’s lineage. During the fractious Muromachi and early Sengoku eras, armor evolved toward tōsei gusoku - plate-and-mail suits designed for mobility - of which these pieces are likely remnants; comparable yoroibitsu and armor components are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Tokyo National Museum. Functionally, the yoroibitsu protected and transported a warrior’s cuirass and arm defenses, while the exterior mon proclaimed allegiance on campaign. Size: 60" L x 40" W (152.4 cm L x 101.6 cm W)

This piece has been tested using C14 dating and is shown to date between these above dates with a probability of 95.4%. A report will accompany this piece. Additionally, XRF testing has been conducted on all areas and shows the dragon and all of the golden surfaces are gilded with high karat gold and the threads in the silk textile are 75% pure gold.
