East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa period, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A serene and atmospheric Japanese hanging scroll painting, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, depicting three travelers on horseback ascending a misty mountain path. Executed in ink with light washes of color, the scene captures a poetic moment of movement through nature, where fog swirls around the riders and the looming peak ahead fades into pale brushwork. Clad in robes and broad sedge hats, the riders appear contemplative, their steady ascent suggesting pilgrimage or poetic retreat. The painting is mounted in green silk brocade with gold accents and bears the artist's signature and red seal, identifying the work as that of Koichi Ei or Hirokazu Ei. A quiet reflection on journeying, impermanence, and the spiritual power of landscape. - Condition: Mounted on scroll and accompanied by wooden scroll box. Some nicks and abrasions to box that do not affect painting. A few aeras of minor stains, but otherwise, painting is in great condition. Artist's signature and seal at upper left.
