Description:

East Asia, Japan, Taisho to early Showa period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A striking papier-mache Noh mask depicting a wide-eyed, expressive male character, likely crafted for use in or inspired by Kagura - Shinto ritual performances of music and dance held in thanksgiving for harvests and communal prosperity. The male figure is rendered with exaggerated features: deep eye sockets, arched brows, red-rimmed golden eyes, a wide grin revealing gray teeth, and a receding hairline. Painted in warm orange tones with vivid red lips and gums, the surface is detailed with accentuated creases that heighten its dramatic presence. The mask reflects the bold visual language of Japanese mythology and folklore, often portraying spirits, deities, or legendary personas. The interior bears a glossy hand-applied lacquer and a Japanese inscription with a seal mark, possibly "Saburo." A fine example of Japanese theatrical art, the mask is mounted on a modern display stand for presentation. Size: 9" L x 6.75" W (22.9 cm x 17.1 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
