Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely woven tsurumaki, or bowstring reel, crafted from tightly plaited cane. This circular form served as a traditional string holder in the practice of kyudo, Japanese archery. The channel is wrapped with 3 tsuru - vegetal fiber strings - neatly coiled for organized and accessible storage. These reels were essential tools for martial artists, allowing practitioners to carry extra bowstrings, as tsuru were prone to breaking during extended use. The tsurumaki exemplifies both utility and craftsmanship, integral to maintaining a disciplined archery practice. Size: 6" Diameter x 1.5" W (15.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
