Lot 268
Native American, Southwest, Hopi-Tewa, Jeddito Revival, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A radiant vessel of tradition and invention, this hand-coiled yellow ware pottery bowl offers a graceful revival of prehistoric Jeddito ceramic aesthetics. With its soft speckled slip and balanced form, the piece evokes the elegance of Sikyatki ware while embracing modern innovation born of the Hopi-Tewa renaissance in the early 20th century. The interior features a bold, asymmetrical painted motif in sienna and dark brown mineral slip. While its curling neck-like arc and plume-like forms may suggest a stylized bird, the image resists precise identification. Geometric and suggestive, it blends angular abstraction with sinuous curves. A vertical central band filled with zigzag lines may allude to water or movement - themes central to Pueblo cosmology and visual tradition. Encircling the exterior is a rhythmic procession of abstract symbols - arrow-like forms, feathers, or directional emblems - repeated in even intervals. Size: 10.2" Diameter x 4.7" H (25.9 cm x 11.9 cm)
A dark line along the inner rim frames the design, anchoring it within the vessel's walls. This bowl likely originated from a First Mesa potter working in the lineage of Nampeyo of Hano or her artistic descendants. The balance of traditional materials, hand-coiled symmetry, and imaginative design place it within the broader Jeddito Revival movement, where ancestral forms were not merely copied but reinterpreted with expressive freedom.
