Description:

Eastern Europe or Ottoman Jewish Communities, Late 19th-Early 21th Century. A substantial and beautifully crafted silver Torah crown, composed of two openwork tiers surmounted by a finial topped with a Magen David upheld by a pair of confronting lions-an emblematic motif symbolizing the Tribe of Judah. The domed upper register features repoussé floral panels framed by scalloped arches, each fitted with a small suspended bell, the gentle ringing echoing the priestly garments described in biblical tradition. The lower tier mirrors the decorative program, with elaborately chased floral cartouches and pierced arches that provide a sense of lightness despite the crown's impressive mass. Size: 12.5" W x 18" H (31.8 cm x 45.7 cm) and weighs an incredible 6 pounds (96 ounces, 2985.6 grams) and is between 92 and 93% silver.

The crown is further embellished with finely beaded edging and a donor inscription engraved around the base, typical of synagogue presentation pieces offered in honor or memory of community members. Its architectural form, repoussé ornamentation, and symbolic lion-and-star finial reflect stylistic traditions found in both Eastern European Jewish silversmithing and the broader Jewish communities of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A commanding and ceremonially significant object, displaying excellent craftsmanship and a notably heavy silver weight.
