Description:

John Encinias (American, b. 1949). Still Life with Lilies and Buddha. Oil on canvas board, n.d. Signed at lower left. A radiant hush fills this intimate still life by John Encinias, where the warmth of lilies and luster of metal meet the mystery of shadow. Rendered in oil on canvas board with sensual brushwork and a nuanced, impressionistic eye, the composition reveals a quiet drama of color and light: alabaster and crimson lilies burst from a jade green vase, their petals tipped with sun, while a polished bronze bowl catches the glow like a hearth. A single orange rests on the tabletop, anchoring the work with humble fruitfulness. In the background, the serene figure of a Buddha sculpture emerges in soft focus, a luminous halo encircling the head, lending the scene a contemplative presence and spiritual calm. Size of painting: 13.5" W x 17.5" H (34.3 cm x 44.4 cm); of frame: 21.5" W x 25.5" H (54.6 cm x 64.8 cm)

Encinias, a self-taught painter raised near Santa Fe and now based in Denver, brings a personal stillness to his subjects. Trained not in art schools but in nature itself - under trees, beneath skies, beside creeks - he developed a style he calls "impressionistic realism," capturing form through atmosphere, structure through light. This painting hums with his signature balance of softness and precision.

He limits his palette to warm and cool versions of the primaries, allowing subtle tonal shifts to carry the emotional weight. And while the brushwork appears loose, it is exacting in purpose - a studied spontaneity that distills years of observation.

Still life, for Encinias, is not a static genre but a lyrical one. Like his plein air landscapes, it invites the viewer to see afresh. Every object in this composition breathes, bathed in a shared light that unifies bowl, blossom, fruit, and sacred figure. "Light is the great unifier of all shapes and forms we see," the artist says. Here, light becomes the true subject, illuminating not only the surfaces but the spiritual core of the work.

With nearly five decades of painting behind him and exhibitions at institutions such as the Frye Museum and the Prix de West, Encinias remains a devoted student of what he sees. This still life, poised between reverence and spontaneity, reveals a painter who continues to find the extraordinary in the ordinary - and to show it, quietly, to us.
