John H. Runne (American, XXI). "Chief Buttercup" oil on canvas board, n.d. Initialed at lower right; signed and titled on verso. A beautiful painting by American artist John Runne titled "Chief Buttercup" displaying a being with an anthropomorphic body yet zoomorphic snout and tail standing in profile atop a rock formation and looking upwards. The background features a vibrant sunset in vivid hues of violet, indigo, azure, lavender, magenta, light orange, and tangerine; these blended tones starkly contrast the solid blocks of color that make up the figure, as well as the textured shades of maroon and burgundy that comprise the rock formation. Dressed in a long, chief's headdress and a Native American tunic, the figure holds out a ribbon in both hands as though giving an offering. The brilliant painting is nicely complemented by a custom, gold-painted frame, complete with a suspension wire on the verso for display! Size of painting: 23.5" W x 29.5" H (59.7 cm x 74.9 cm); of frame: 28.125" W x 34.125" H (71.4 cm x 86.7 cm)
