John "Jack" Savitsky (American, 1910-1991). Portrait of a miner. Pencil and marker drawing on paper, 1983. Signed and dated at lower right. A fascinating drawing by Jack Savitsky - an American Folk Artist who notably worked for more than thirty years in the coal mines of Lansford, Pennsylvania - depicting a scene from his daily life, perhaps even a self-portrait: a miner in profile facing right with train tracks and a house in the background. The strong composition is complemented by stark lines and minimalist imagery, all set behind glass in a custom matte and wooden frame. Size of drawing: 4.5" W x 6.5" H (11.4 cm x 16.5 cm); of frame: 9" W x 11" H (22.9 cm x 27.9 cm)
John "Jack" Savitsky (1910-1991) was a self-taught American folk artist celebrated for his vibrant and heartfelt depictions of life in the coal mining regions of northeastern Pennsylvania, where he himself worked for over three decades. Forced into retirement due to black lung disease, Savitsky turned to art, capturing the daily lives of miners and their families, rural landscapes, and occasional religious or whimsical scenes with a direct and honest style. Using bright colors and simple forms, his paintings and drawings on canvas, wood, and even found materials offer a charming and poignant glimpse into a specific time and place, earning him recognition as a significant figure in 20th-century folk art.
