Description:

Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). “Red Soldier" oil on board, n.d. Signed at lower left. Title and artist on plaque on frame. A provoking painting by American artist Jon Zahourek depicting as standing Native American rendered in open brushstrokes and warm hues of scarlet, vermillion, saffron, and tangerine. Bare-chested the native soldier confronts the viewer, grasping a tomahawk held nearly perpendicular to his torso as his braids and feathered headdress blow in the wind, adding wispy, dreamlike air to the composition. The legs of the figure begin to fade below his loincloth, accentuating the ethereal quality of the image. Size of painting: 19.5" W x 29.5" H (49.5 cm x 74.9 cm); of frame: 25.5" W x 35.5" H (64.8 cm x 90.2 cm)

In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
