Description:

Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). Nude Woman. Watercolor and pencil on paper, n.d. Signed at upper right. A fluid and luminous exploration of the human form, this watercolor by Jon Zahourek captures a seated nude with expressive looseness and intuitive grace. Rendered in washes of warm pinks, oranges, and delicate yellows, the figure reclines with quiet vulnerability, her gaze turned to her left, her limbs softly abstracted. The transparency of the medium evokes not just flesh, but feeling - each gesture of pigment a meditation on light, emotion, and embodiment. The composition is spare yet striking. Zahourek leaves large portions of the paper untouched, allowing the negative space to act as a counterbalance to the saturated figure. His control of line and color shows the hand of an artist deeply familiar with anatomy, not only in structure, but in sensation. Size of painting: 7.5" W x 9.5" H (19 cm x 24.1 cm); of frame: 14" W x 16" H (35.6 cm x 40.6 cm)

In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
