Lot 113
Central Europe, Jurassic (Oxfordian), ca. 155 million years ago. This large, beautiful white limestone rock slab is called a trace fossil from a prehistoric ocean. It is a fossilized Jurassic Period ocean floor displaying perfectly preserved ripples from wave action approximately 160 million years ago. It was collected many years ago from a quarry that once produced stone for construction in Central Europe but the quarry has been since closed. In the source deposit, most of the ripples were not well-preserved or concentrated as this piece is. This is one of the most intriguing architectural display fossils and it is amazing to see and even more amazing to touch! Slab is of an even thickness and could be mounted on a wall if a custom-made frame were to be made. Slab can also be laid flat as it was originally formed beneath the sea. If laid flat, this would make an incredible base to display smaller fossils of various ocean life resting on it such as fossil shark teeth, ammonite fossils or trilobite fossils. The rock is hard, durable and very stable, so much so that this slab could even be walked on without damaging the ripple pattern. Size: 1" L x 20" W x 19" H (2.5 cm x 50.8 cm x 48.3 cm).
Some of the largest dinosaurs that ever walked the earth were in existence when these ocean floor ripples were formed. As that was happening, monstrous prehistoric sea reptiles such as massive plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs, swam over this fossilized sea bed. Formed by ocean waves 160 million years ago when dinosaurs ruled the Earth!
