Karel Appel (Dutch, 1921 - 2006). Abstract Composition. Color lithograph, n.d. Artist proof. Hand-signed at lower right and editioned at lower left. A vibrant, untitled artist proof color lithograph by Karel Appel, one of the most innovative European painters and printmakers of the postwar era. Executed in bold strokes of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, the composition pulses with energy, its forms twisting and colliding in a dynamic interplay that resists definition yet suggests organic and animal-like shapes. The gestural spontaneity reflects Appel's lifelong interest in childlike expression and the unfiltered freedom of imagination, a hallmark of his work as a founding member of the avant-garde CoBrA movement. In this lithograph, color itself becomes both subject and structure, layered in restless lines that capture the immediacy of Appel's hand. Size: 19" W x 12" H (48.3 cm x 30.5 cm) Size: 27.5" W x 20.75" H (69.8 cm x 52.7 cm)
The work embodies his rejection of academic precision in favor of instinctive creation, echoing the primitivist and playful vitality that inspired his career. Signed in pencil at the lower right and inscribed "epreuve d'artiste" (artist proof) at the lower left, this print exemplifies Appel's fearless exploration of graphic media alongside his celebrated paintings and sculptures.
About the artist: Karel Appel studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and had his first solo exhibition in 1946. Inspired by artists like Paul Klee and Joan Miro as well as children's drawings, folk art, and outsider art, Appel rejected traditional academic approaches and created his own innovative approach. He was a founding member of the avant-garde group known as CoBrA (an acronym for the cities Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam where the various artists originated) which espoused a rejection of geometric abstraction and rationalism. When CoBrA dissolved in 1952, Appel joined Art Informel, another group of innovative artists which included Michel Tapie and Henri Michaux. Appel had several solo exhibitions throughout his almost six decade long career, and his works have been collected by elite museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
