Description:

Kerr Eby (Canadian, 1889-1946). "Hungerford Bridge" etching on paper, 1929. Edition 90. Hand-signed and numbered beneath etching. A finely executed etching by Kerr Eby depicting the Hungerford Foot Bridge spanning the River Thames in London, with the industrial riverside in the foreground and the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben visible in the hazy distance. Executed in 1929, the work reflects Eby's sharp eye for atmosphere and structural detail, capturing both the gritty dynamism of the docks and the architectural grandeur of the city beyond. Eby traveled through Great Britain and France in 1924-1925, a period that inspired many of his most compelling European cityscapes. In this composition, he balances meticulous draftsmanship with a tonal subtlety that lends the scene a sense of both immediacy and timelessness. The present example is from the numbered edition of 90, and is signed by the artist in pencil at lower right. Size of etching: 13.5" W x 8.75" H (34.3 cm x 22.2 cm); of frame: 20.5" W x 15.5" H (52.1 cm x 39.4 cm)

"Hungerford Bridge" is represented in major institutional collections, including the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, Arizona State University, Boston Public Library, Davison Art Center (Wesleyan University), Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Huntington Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art (Dartmouth College), Metropolitan Museum of Art, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of American Art, New York Public Library, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

About the artist: Kerr Eby was a Canadian-born illustrator and printmaker whose career became defined by his powerful depictions of modern warfare. Born in Tokyo to Canadian missionary parents, he later studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York. Eby served with the U.S. Army during World War I, first in an ambulance unit and later as a camoufleur, creating sketches of life and death on the front that would shape his later work.

In the decades that followed, he transformed these early impressions into haunting lithographs, many of which were gathered in his influential volume War. Recognized for his achievements, he was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1930 and became a full Academician in 1934. During World War II, though too old to enlist, he joined the Abbott Laboratories combat artists program and accompanied Marines in the Pacific campaigns, producing some of his most compelling images.

Eby died in 1946 in Westport, Connecticut, after contracting a tropical illness while overseas. His drawings, prints, and paintings remain a vital record of 20th-century conflict, represented in the collections of major museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
