Description:

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire, Angkor Period, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A large cast bronze chariot or palanquin element, originally mounted via the hollow tubular socket at its base. The form depicts a mythological Garuda figure standing atop a multi-headed Naga serpent. The Garuda raises both arms upward with bent elbows, wings flaring outward, and wears a prominent flaring headdress. Below, the Naga coils in a sweeping arc, its multiple cobra heads and fanned hoods rendered in high relief with deeply incised and low relief ornamentation, including chakra rosettes and stylized scales. The elaborate decoration features swirling vegetal motifs and concentric circular patterns characteristic of Khmer stone and metalwork from Angkorian temples. This piece likely once surmounted a vehicle of an elite individual - possibly a royal litter or chariot - serving as a protective finial and symbol of power and divine guardianship. Size: 6" W x 13" H (15.2 cm x 33 cm); 19.5" H (49.5 cm) on included custom stand.
