Description:

Koh Ker style, Khmer, ca. 8th century CE. Cambodia, Khmer, Koh Ker Period, ca. 921–945 CE. A magnificently carved dark gray basalt head of Shiva of exceptional refinement and spiritual presence, representing the pinnacle of Koh Ker Period Khmer sculptural achievement. The god is depicted with a tall, finely knotted jata hairdo — the matted ascetic locks associated with Shiva's identity as the great renunciant and cosmic destroyer — with rows of hair cascading down the back of the head and neck in meticulously carved detail.

Koh Ker sculpture is renowned for its powerful, boldly modeled forms and the commanding authority of its divine images. Shiva was the preeminent deity of the Koh Ker royal cult, embodying divine kingship, cosmic power, and creative destruction. Size: 8.5”H x 5”W (21.6 x 12.7cm).
