Kristine E. Smock (American, b. 1950). Painted iron Hanukkah menorah, n.d. Signed on the red curl extending below the arched form. Perhaps the most incredible menorah we have ever seen! A sizeable nine-lamp (eight branches plus the central shamash) Hanukkah menorah, or hanukkiah, with each branch depicting a zoomorphic or anthropomorphic figure, and a star of David adorning the stem of the lamp. The imagery provides endless delight - a birds dressed in a stylish red dress and high-heeled shoes; a rooster donning a red shirt, blue pants, and boots; an enormous fish with colorful scales and fins; a long emerald green lizard; a coiled rattlesnake; another bird dressed in an aqua polka dotted blue jumpsuit, an adorable canine gazing up at the lamp he holds with his tail wagging below, and the list goes on. All is rendered with radiant color and dynamic energy. Size: 27.625" W x 17.125" H (70.2 cm x 43.5 cm)
About the artist: "Kristine Smock is both a painter and sculptor, who has lived and worked in Colorado for over the past twenty years. She works in such mediums as clay, steel, bronze, concrete, and recycled mixed media materials. Many of her sculptures explore the notion of movement, and find new shape through the application of springs, hinges, spindles, and gears. Smock says, 'I am drawn to found objects. I like to use cast off items in my pieces to see if it is possible to transform them into something else. I enjoy recycling while I work and hope that the pieces are humorous and beautiful. I like to see what happens when I turn things upside down and shake things a bit. I am constantly tempted to try new ideas, mediums, and techniques. I've always wanted to make large concrete and mosaic forms, especially after numerous trips to Mexico, France, and Italy. My inspiration comes from spiritual art figures found in the churches, ancient architectural ruins, animals forms, human relations, and the natural world around me." (Museum of Outdoor Arts website)
