Description:

Tim Vigil also known as Ku Se Peen (Tesuque Pueblo, d. 1972). Deer and Buffalo Dance. Gouache on paper, 1969. Signed "Ku Se Peen" with date at lower right. A delightful painting by Tesuque Pueblo artist Tim Vigil, also known as Ku Se Peen or Rocky Mountain, depicting two Buffalo Dancers, two Deer Dancers, and one female dancer in a white tunic, all on a beige ground. The Buffalo dancers wear buffalo hide headdresses with buffalo horns and bird feathers as they hold a bow in one hand and a maraca in the other. A belt sash and bells adorn their hips, each suspending a skirt with the image of a snake. The woman who dances between them also wears a plumed headdress and holds eagle feathers in each hand. Below, two deer dancers are dressed in the antlers of a mule deer, evergreen branches, and more bird feathers. They hold branches of pines as a pair of pine trees are shown on either side. Size of painting: 19" W x 13.5" H (48.3 cm x 34.3 cm); of frame: 27.75" W x 23.5" H (70.5 cm x 59.7 cm)

About the artist: "Tesuque Pueblo painter Tim Vigil Ku Se Peen - Rocky Mountain was the son of Thomas Vigil, one of the earliest 20th century Pueblo painters, and the brother of Paul Vigil. Thomas Vigil worked almost exclusively within the confines of the two-dimensional 'flat-style' of painting for which he and his peers are well-known today, and the few available published examples of Tim and Paul's work are also in keeping with this traditional style."
