Pre-Columbian, northwestern Argentina (Calchaqui Valley to San Juan Province), Aguada Culture, Early Period, ca. 600 to 700 CE. A graceful, wonderfully preserved blackware bowl from a little known culture with a curved base, deep interior, and flaring mouth. The surface on interior and exterior is a high-fired black. Incised motifs - repeated triangles with stippled interiors that resemble sharp teeth or some other abstracted zoomorphic form - wrap around the exterior. People in Aguada lived in small communities at the foot of the Andes that left almost no architectural remains, but they had a robust trade with the complex urban cultures of the mountainous regions. Size: 8.6" W x 4.1" H (21.8 cm x 10.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA; ex-collection of Imre and Nicholas T. Molnar, acquired between 1960-1978, by descent
