Description:

Pre-Columbian, South America, Argentina, La Aguada/Aquada culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A wonderful example of a smoking pipe, hand-carved from gray stone with dark grey inclusions, skillfully delineated in the form of an avian, with the mouthpiece beneath the bird's feet, the cup-shaped receptacle that enabled the user to efficiently draw the smoke from the pipe just below the head and opposite the wings. In addition, the bird head finial features a prominent beak, circular eyes inlaid with white stone, and finely incised feathers. Clearly, the lapidary artisan took pride in not only the function of this pipe, but also its artistry and presentation. Size: 8" L x 2" W x 2.375" H (20.3 cm x 5.1 cm x 6 cm)
