Oceania, Melanesia, Western New Guinea, Papua Province, Sentani Lake region, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden platter from the Lake Sentani region of West Papua, New Guinea, its oval form adorned with the characteristic interlocking spiral motifs. These symbolize social cohesion, cooperation, and possibly the connection between heaven and earth in local tradition. With a rich, darkened patina and traces of wear from handling, this platter reflects its traditional role - owned by women and used for serving meat and fish. Size: 16" L x 8.3" W (40.6 cm x 21.1 cm)
