Polynesia, Western Samoa, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome wooden model of a catamaran, featuring two canoes lashed together in realistic manner with wooden booms. This large model features many fine details and is skillfully carved. Catamarans featuring larger structures atop their central planks were used by Samoans and other Polynesians to undertake long voyages, carrying all members of a family across the Pacific. Size: 29.5" L x 13.95" W x 3.75" H (74.9 cm x 35.4 cm x 9.5 cm)
