Burkina Faso, West Africa, ca. 20th century CE. This is a large wooden carved mask with triangular scale details and alternating colors of paint, particularly on the tail. There is a wooden stand with woven rope handles projecting from the back. Burkina Faso, located in a tropical climate and a harshly-controlled French colony for much of the 20th century, is home to the large ethnic group, the Mossi. Much of their art consists of wood carvings and it often has a political message. Size: 14.25" W x 34.5" H (36.2 cm x 87.6 cm).
