Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large V-shaped axe handle, carved from red wood, with an ornate avian/reptilian motif on the handle and butt. Thick rattan is wrapped around one end of the axe in order to secure a stone or metal blade. Size: 18.75" W x 39.25" H (47.6 cm x 99.7 cm); 40.5" H (102.9 cm) on included custom stand.
