Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Bura-Asinda-Sikka, ca. 1050 CE. A highly stylized stone figure with an abstract anthropomorphic form. The sandstone is hand carved with an elongated body that tapers to a narrow base. The top features a corseted neck and a bulbous head. At one time there may have been a face carved into the surface to represent an ancestor or deity. The stake shape may have been inserted in the ground as a marker for a grave. Size: 13.5" L x 4" W (34.3 cm x 10.2 cm)
