Description:

Southwestern US, Anasazi (Ancient Puebloan) culture, ca. 1100 to 1250 CE. This is a black-on-white snowflake pottery pitcher, created by the coiling and scrape technique using temper of fine crushed sherd or fine sand; the surface finish is white slipped and unslipped (the dark surface decorations) and polished smooth. The designs are interlocking and geometric, labyrinths that also suggest the snowcapped peaks that were the backdrop for many of the people who lived in this region. This is probably a seed jar, and would have been used by the people who lived in the Four Corners region during a time of economic prosperity and enormous growth, when large religious and population centers like Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde flourished. Size: 8" W x 6.8" H (20.3 cm x 17.3 cm)
