Africa, Northeast Nigeria, Katsina, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A characteristically enlarged head on torso from the Katsina culture of ancient Nigeria that nicely demonstrates the stylistic dictates embraced by the Katsina culture such as the oval shaped face, the half-closed eyes, short nose, and jutting chin. He sports a finely manicured beard and wears an incised, thick collar or pectoral. His half closed eyes and open mouth suggest that he is perhaps chanting or singing while engaged in a prayerful ritual. The Katsina aesthetic shares affinities with that of classical Nok and the Soweto visual aesthetics, however the blend of abstract and somewhat naturalistic features departs a bit and seems to aspire to portraiture. An impressive example. Custom stand. Size: 5.75" L x 5.5" W x 13.5" H (14.6 cm x 14 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Peter Arnovick collcection
