Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Nok culture, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A fascinating coarse earthenware figure (that would have been smooth and painted when originally made), with a long, bell-shaped body, no neck, and a rounded head with applied eyelids, mouth, necklace, and ears. The face is incised with zigzagging lines that give an impression of tattoos. This figure is from a mysterious and understudied ceramic tradition that represents the artistic output of one of Africa's earliest centers of ironworking and pottery production. Size: 7.5" W x 14" H (19 cm x 35.6 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection; ex-Meredith Smith collection, Redlands, California, USA, 1980s
