South Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lingam quartzite stone of dark gray hue, adorned with natural iron oxide bands that create a mottled pattern of earthy red and brown encircling its center, with additional splotches enhancing its organic beauty. Undoubtedly, the individual who selected this stone was drawn to its naturally striking appearance. Great care was taken to polish and smooth the surface, making it both tactilely pleasing and visually captivating. Lingam stones, abstract representations of the god Shiva (Siva), are naturally shaped by the currents of the Narmada River before being collected and polished for use in temples or smaller shrines. They are often positioned alongside representations of the goddess Shakti, known as the Yoni, symbolizing the cosmic union of divine energies. Size: 9" L x 5.5" W (22.9 cm x 14 cm)
