Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay / Chimu, ca. 800 to 1450 CE. A fascinating and quite sizable pottery olla featuring a voluminous body, a corseted neck, and a wide-flaring spout flanked by a pair of ribbon-form handles, all sitting upon a rounded base. Adorned in white on black on red decoration, the vessel is painted with 2 panels of imagery, each displaying a crouching simian figure with frog-like legs, outspread arms, large ears, and a huge headdress of 2 wing-like appendages, somewhat reminiscent of the pair of snakes that sprout from the head of the Moche deity Ai Apec. Each figure is placed between a pair of spiral motifs. Size: 10.5" Diameter x 16.5" H (26.7 cm x 41.9 cm)
