Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous and sizable example of a lace-like textile panel that is loosely woven from camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in creamy white and pale-yellow hues. The textile panel is adorned with dozens of minimalist bird figures with zigzagging bodies hovering above that of a neighboring bird and slender beaks that are mutually shared by a bird on the opposite side. The textiles of the ancient Chancay demonstrate their immense artistic and technical developments achieved through generations of textile weaving. Mounted atop a beige fabric panel that is stretched across a wooden display frame. Size (textile & frame): 54" W x 56" H (137.2 cm x 142.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private C. Webster collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, acquired before 2000; ex-Paul Shepard collection
