Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu Culture, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A large cotton plain-weave cloth adorned with bold brocaded motifs woven in dyed alpaca wool. The design features abstract feline or crowned figures with simplified faces upon conjoined bodies, alongside fish. These motifs are created using a discontinuous supplementary weft technique - the dyed threads are woven into select areas of the white cloth panels, forming decorative imagery. This method produces a raised, brocade-like texture and allows for faster execution compared to other patterning techniques. The textile was likely part of a funerary tunic or mantle, intended to accompany the deceased in burial. It is now mounted on modern red cloth over a frame and ready for display. A remarkable and visually striking textile artifact! Size of textile: 26.5" L x 23" W (67.3 cm x 58.4 cm); panel mount: 28" L x 24" W (71.1 cm x 61 cm)
