Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of sizable form depicting a corpulent frog standing upon a quartet of nubbin legs. The stone-burnished exterior surfaces are decorated in dense linear and saurian motifs in hues of black, red, and purple in characteristic Macaracas style. Size: 9.5" L x 8.75" W x 7.8" H (24.1 cm x 22.2 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-The estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 291. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.
