Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large Spondylus ornament pendant displaying an abstracted zoomorphic design, possibly representing a hybrid creature. The form bears a resemblance to a kneeling coatimundi. Multiple suspension holes are present along the upper and lower edges. Spondylus, also known as the thorny oyster, thrives in the warm coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. Its vibrant orange and pink hues were highly prized in ancient Mesoamerican cultures and widely traded throughout the region. The shell was especially favored for ornamental carvings in jewelry, and its luxury status is underscored by its frequent inclusion in the burials of high-ranking individuals. Size: 5" L x 2.75" W (12.7 cm x 7 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
