Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Cauca Valley, Caldas Complex, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A round-bodied, figural urn capped by a neck and spout, shaped like a highly sylized head. The face is a wonderfully classic example of this culture's sculptural style, with squinting eyes, a mouth that echoes its form, a huge, pointed nose, and large ears. The nose and ears are pierced and probably once had rings through them, perhaps made of gold. The horn on the nose possibly represents a bat, a creature associated with death and the underworld. Red stripes on the face and body may be indicative of tattooing or scarification practices common in this culture. Size: 10.5" W x 15" H (26.7 cm x 38.1 cm)
An urn like this one was made to be used in burials, containing mummified or cremated remains. They have been found inside of caves and buried underneath residential structures. This was part of a wider tradition in the uplands and in the Amazon basin, where urns were used to hold human remains in a variety of pre-Columbian and even early post-Columbian traditions.
