Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Chiriqui or Diquis culture, ca. 1000 to 1520 CE. A marvelous carved effigy of a crouching jaguar, made from a hefty and rounded volcanic stone, the downturned head facing towards the ground, snarling and formidable. The artist captures the essence of the animal's face, focusing on the large eyes, teeth to convey the alert and watchful presence of this domineering creature. Since great effort was put into the jaguar's head rather than the compact body, the face is best viewed from below - it is plausible to surmise this jaguar was positioned in a niche above the viewer, to glare down at them. Size: 15" L x 6" W x 9.5" H (38.1 cm x 15.2 cm x 24.1 cm)

For a near identical example of this jaguar effigy, please see the Emory University Michael C. Carlos Museum's website, object number: 1991.004.213.

Known as the "king of beasts" in the Pre-Columbian world and infamous for possessing high speed and massive strength, the jaguar was believed to dominate nature and inspire respect and awe throughout the ancient Americas. Jaguars were associated with strength and leadership, whether regarding spirituality or martial skill. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this King of Beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World whom they viewed as their spirit companion and protector.
