Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A large footed, polychrome vessel with motifs of jaguars and plumed serpents in two wide bands, one around the foot and one just above the shoulder. Ornate linear and geometric motifs surround these bands, painted creamy white, red, and black. Three round perforations around the wide foot allow the vessel to have a rattle in its base, creating a pleasing musical effect when shaken.
