Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A rotund pottery figure seated upon a pair of conical legs and a rounded base. The figure has sinuous arms holding corn in one hand and a small staff in the other, a lengthy necklace with a massive winged pectoral, and boasts incised striations down the verso. The abstract head has a ringed nose, puffy lips, concentric circular eyes beneath arching brows, and cupped ears, all beneath a tiered conical cap. The 'tail' of the figure doubles as the whistle's mouthpiece, though the instrument produces no sound when played. Size: 5" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 19 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Figure repaired from multiple large pieces, with restoration to areas of necklace, mouthpiece, and tone hole on base, and small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks to feet, body, and head, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Whistle produces no sound when played.
