Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rican, ca. 1000-1500 CE. This large, handbuilt vessel presents a lovely form with two sizeable frogs appliqued to the exterior walls. The frog or "rana" in Spanish is associated with rain and the sustenance that it brings in various Pre-Columbian cultures. Croaking frogs are believed to herald rainstorms. Frogs and toads undergo metamorphosis, and this amplified the importance of these animals during Pre-Columbian times as this process seemed to reenact the transforming changes achieved by shamans during rituals. 5 1/2"H x 10 1/4"D at widest
