Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay Province, Trobriand Islands (sometimes Kiriwina Islands), Massim people, ca. early 20th century CE. A superb and sizable carved-wood bowl in the form of a boat. Sitting upon a round yet stable base, the fascinating vessel displays thick walls that rise to an ovoid rim over a deep basin. The exterior rim of the vessel is adorned with abstract decorative carvings in high relief featuring an anthropomorphic figure with spread arms on either side that acts as a handle and an undulating striation flanked by two paddles on both ends. Size: 25" L x 14.25" W x 7" H (63.5 cm x 36.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
