Description:

Egypt, ca. 19th dynasty, 1292 - 1189 BCE. A large carved limestone ushabti, ancient Egypt, 19th Dynasty, Ramesside period, circa 1295–1186 BCE. The figure wears the royal wig — a scarce attribute on ushabti figures, which more commonly display the tripartite wig or the simple striated wig of the deceased — indicating a commissioner of elevated status, possibly a royal official, high priest, or member of the court circle. The limestone medium, rather than the more common faience or painted wood of the period, further distinguishes this as an object of some ambition and rarity.

The royal wig on this example evokes the divine kingship of the pharaoh and the aspirations of the deceased to share in the eternal life of the gods. A scarce and significant example of Ramesside funerary art. Size: 8”H x 2.5”W (20.3 x 6.3cm).

Provenance: Ex. Tonio Birbiglia, LA. With Arte Primitivo in 2016, auction 82. Ex. Helios Gallery, UK., ex. private South Wales collection.
