Description:

Egypt, possibly Amarna period, ca. 14th century BCE. This is a beautiful small amulet, in excellent condition, showing the god Bes posed with knees bent and obvious large phallus. He has a beard which is often interpreted as a lion's mane; his plumed headdress is also diagnostic of the character. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. An amulet like this one was made to be worn for protection and is a brilliant blue faience. See the Metropolitan Museum of Art for similar examples. Size: 0.85" W x 2.2" H (2.2 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private CA collection, acquired at Jean & Hugue Ramie, Cannes before 1990
