Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. A large faience winged scarab, with carved details of head, body, and legs, pierced for suspension. Amulets of the scarab were hugely popular for over a thousand years in ancient Egypt, a symbol with staying power similar to that of the Christian cross; they seem to have been worn and carried by the living, although by the time of the third intermediate period, they had also become part of the increasingly elaborate battery of items to be placed into graves for protection of the dead. Size: 1.2" L x 0.9" W x 0.25" H (3 cm x 2.3 cm x 0.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private CA collection, acquired at Jean & Hugue Ramie, Cannes before 1990
